Updates! Disc Brakes! Sharpening the knife!

sorry for the miss last week! It was a wild week of family things! It looked like everyone had a blast at Pop’s! I’m sorry I missed it! Next time Gadget! As we are now closer to race season, the workouts will start to have some more threshold work and push into VO2! get ready for the fun! for this week’s Coaches corner, I want to talk about disc brakes. Similar to my tubeless/wheels post, this will be more of a PSA, specifically on bed in procedures. Ill post links to the shimano and sram bed in procedure videos at the bottom.

First, what is bed in? In order for your disc brakes to function correctly(think maximum power, no chattering or noise) you must "bed" pad material into the rotor, and rotor material into the pad. The system works just like your car does, just at much lower temperatures. By doing a proper bed in, you can ensure the best performance of your brakes. In the shop, the most common cause of smoked and overheated rotors is from riding without doing a bed in. Usually this is from descending and glazing over the pads/rotors before they’ve been bedded in. Bed in is a safety procedure! make sure you’re bedding in your brakes whenever you change pads or rotors, or when purchasing a new bike. Don’t be afraid to ask the shop if they’ve done this. Good news! if you haven’t done this and your pads/rotors aren’t toast, you can save them! Clean your pads and rotors with isopropyl alcohol, let them dry and head out to bed them in!
